The Darlin’ Dal Philosophy
Meet Jo-Anne Stutley now 58 years old…
Life was always going to be interesting when you began your formative years underground (Coober Pedy) and serving imaginary friends with mud pies and cups of tea, let alone falling asleep in year two in Miss Pickhavers meditation class.
From a seven-storey cliff fall (Marino Rocks 1993) to walking out of hospital in 17 days, Jo’s journey is nothing short of miraculous.
Years ago, Jo survived a near-death experience after falling from a 50 metre cliff, breaking her spine in four places, double pneumothorax and sustaining a severe head injury let alone the bits and bobs that fell off or went disarray on the way down.
The miracle began with the dynamic team of bystanders, paramedics, helicopters and eventually the Star Force were called in.
Rushed to hospital, her family were told that if she makes it through the night she would not be the woman they once knew as there could be cognitive and mobility challenges plus a very long recovery.
Seven major operations and seventeen days later in the spinal unit, she discharged herself without family approval and with a mystical experience in her front pocket she precariously walked out, found a taxi and asked to go home.
What began as a personal recovery has became the heartbeat of Darlin’ Dal. With over 30 years in the health food world and a background in nursing and Ayurveda, Jo has created a brand that’s as joyful as it is nourishing.
She’s known for her spice-pot wizardry (the magical medicinal hotpot), her weekly produce hunts at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market, and her gift for inspiring others through workshops, events, and every delicious creation that leaves her kitchen.
For Jo, the philosophy is simple: heal the gut, lift the spirit, and the rest will follow.
From our legendary versatile original recipes of Darlin’ Dal’s we call our gut biome sauce to carefully selected spice that give your immune system a little shimmy, everything we make when possible is pesticide free, organic, biodynamic, and 100% created with love for your belly and the environment.
So come for the flavour, stay for the joy… Darlin Dal isn’t just food, it’s a big warm hug for your insides.
The Beginnings Of Darlin’ Dal
This was Jo’s welcome to the neighbourhood.
Meredith Russell a beautiful artist, yoga teacher and Ayurveda Cook welcomed “K’charee Kitchn” to the neighbourhood with a chalked rangoli…
(Meredith runs here Ayurvedic cooking classes from The Heart Of Ayurveda)
The whole store was made from hard rubbish and Jo’s younger brother built the famous organic spice shelves (below right)
It all began on Grange Rd in a shop called “K’charee Kitchn” (below left) a gorgeous little Ayurveda spice and organic vegetable store. Dal was made at home in the council approved kitchen. Served in store from a hotpot we called “the magical medicinal hotpot” new recipes kept flowing. Names were given to them (the Dals) and the community grew.
Two doors up the ol’ Chinese shop with 5 wok burners came up for rent just before Covid. Pressure cookers purchased, 30litre cooking pots.
